We recognize Mother Earth as the original healer. We recognize our role as stewards of the land we occupy, deferring to the First Nations Native Kanien'kehá:ka knowledge to care of our Mother. We honor the ancestors of the Ahkwesáhsne, the land where the partridge drums, and the peoples who belong here.
Indigenous Culture, Not Permaculture
It is our goal to create a decolonized habitat in our land space. We are very intentional about what we plant, how we plant, and why we plant. Our gardens are designed to be entirely accessible for anyone who wants to commune with them and we utilized Kanien'kehá:ka practices such as Three Sisters planting, Mound planting, and companion planting. We choose native plants over invasive or naturalized ones; we save seeds to create our own heirloom collection; we use only natural or organic bug repellents, never chemicals; we sing to our plants and do yoga in the garden. We are one with the land and the land is one with us.
Focused specifically items that can be used for home remedy healing, we intentionally grow native herbal and medicinal plants used on Turtle Island across millennia.. We do stock non-native herbs, but in planters and pots to avoid invasive growth.
Focused heavily on native pollinators, we do have some non-native species of plants that are naturalized to this region. This garden is a work-in-progress, with some projects still needing to happen to finalize the space.
Focused on native wild fruits and trees, we are planting a small orchard across the two acres, while we also seed save to create an heirloom collective of these plants. We are constantly on the lookout for new trees or bushes to forage to add to our collection.
Focused on creating unfettered access to fresh vegetables for our community, we plant in two spaces: the Greens Garden and the Veggie Garden. These spaces are accessible 24/7 and the produce harvested will supply the Massena Food Not Bombs Little Free Pantry at the Massena Public Library.
Farm Projects You Can Support
We are always looking for a variety of native plants - food, trees, bushes. If you have access to spaces where we can forage for these plants, please let us know. Otherwise, here are our current projects
